This is an old revision of the document!
TypeXtra was designed to make setting up TypeX and Nesica Systems more straightforward.
There are lots of different game sets out in the wild, so setup can be quite a confusing job. This aims to make it a few clicks job.
TypeXtra does not come with any “ROMS.” That would be illegal. If you own the system you are aiming to emulate, then you can secure a “ROM” image of the game to emulate on your PC.
Once you have the ROM/s you want, TypeXtra aims to make setup a 3 step process:
N.B. These demo pics were taken on an older version of TypeXtra. Therefore, some of the settings pages have changed. Sure you'll figure it out ;)
Notice all of the red crosses. Crosses = bad. Ticks = good. :) You need the first two ticks to launch a game and the last tick to know when it has finished.
Click Settings, Add and then add any ROM directories.
Once you have done the ROM folders scan, you should seen more ticks!
Now install Games services. This will install files such as launch files and controls files to make game setups complete. Click on the “injection” icon.
You should see something like this:
Note that a lot of the needed files are now automatically set up, with Game Folder, Launch File and Monitor File.
TypeXtra will let you know if it knows your exe and if so, whether it's good, bad or one with idiosyncracies. For example:
Shows that there are some issues with this exe. Click on the icon for further details.
Let's say you know you have Arcana Heart 2 in your set. It's likely that this is a game without a game.inf file. Click on the Folder icon at the bottom:
This will open a folder browser and allow you to specify the game folder.
You can click the buttons to the right of this to specify the launch, monitor and controls file respectively. Be sure to “Install game services” and “Update Database” again once you've added more game folders.
Once you have things setup, all that's left is to click the Launch Game Button:
This helps all games run at higher resolutions. It makes changes to the registry which can later be undone via “SD Patch” if you wish. You will get a warning - don't worry - the changes are kosha.
Nesica requires a file running which acts as a networking bridge. This is called NeSysService. You have a choice whether you run this service game by game, but I would reccommend running NeSysService as an actual service.
NeSysService.exe is a Taito file, so this isn't included with TypeXtra. You will need two files to install NeSysService as a service:
Once you have these, install them to TypeXtra via the Settings page below and then click “Install As Service”:
This is a one time operation. The service will then start and stop automatically with windows.
These are sets of modified executables and other files which help the games to run better than the origianl dumps. These have to be sourced outside of TypeXtra, but once located, can be imported.
These are version controlled and in 7z format - TypeXtra will check the checksum of the 7z file to ensure it's of the right structure and the files are virus free etc. It will also display the creation date of the set you are trying to install and the one installed presently:
Go to settings and click Import Game Services Set. Choose the correct 7z file and follow the process.
Once you have imported the set, you can install the updated sets with:
You can also install modified exe's to increas the resolution. Like above, you will have to source these yourself, but once found they can be imported as long as they are in the correct format:
Once they have been imported, if a game has an HDExe file available to it then the HD button will show a green background when the game is selected. To install the exe, click this. Depending on your settings, you will either have to choose the resolution you require, or it will automatically be set to your default:
Testing the Game Monitor file
This file is the file that TypeXtra watches for exit. The Launchfile isn't always the main game file, therefore it has to watch something else to know that the game has finished.
You can do this by clicking the radar button next to the play button. It'll animate to let you know it's running:
If the file that TypeXtra is monitoring finished when you finish the game, then the radar will turn to a success icon:
Hint: if you can't exit out of a game, the best method is the press Alt+Tab and then close it from there.
Shortcuts will only be created for games that have a confirmed Folder and Launchfile. You can choose whether to further filter by “Confirmed Good.”
